Granada

Around ten people, which is small enough that the guide can talk rather than announce. The angle here is that the Alhambra is not a Muslim monument with Christian additions. It is a hill that three cultures used in turn, and the tour is built to show all three: the Moorish castle and the Generalife gardens the Nasrids made, the Christian buildings the conquerors inserted afterwards, and the Jewish presence in a kingdom where all three lived, traded and argued at once. Granada was the last place in western Europe where that arrangement held. The route takes in the Nasrid Palaces, the Alcazaba, the Generalife and the outside of the Palace of Charles V, with the queue skipped at the gate. The Alcazaba is where the geography lands. From the towers you get Granada below and the Sierra Nevada behind it, still holding snow into the spring, and the reason a fortress went here rather than anywhere else becomes a matter of looking rather than listening. Getting up to the meeting point is possible on foot, by the C30 or C32 bus, by taxi or on the tourist train.

  1. P.º del Generalife, 1F, Granada

The meeting point is the steel map at the front entrance of the Alhambra, near the box office. You can come up on foot, on the C30 or C32 bus, by taxi or on the tourist train. The guide carries a white umbrella with the Nhue logo. Be at the meeting point 15 minutes before the start time.

  2. Nasrid Palaces

The Nasrid Palaces, the high point of Islamic art on the site and part of the World Heritage listing. Architecture, courtyards and decoration worked to a level that has no rival left standing in Europe.

  3. Explore the Alcazaba

The Alcazaba, the oldest military fortress in the Alhambra. Walking its towers and walls gives the panorama over Granada with the Sierra Nevada behind.

  4. Generalife

The Generalife, the leisure gardens of the Nasrid sultans. Fountains, courtyards planted for flowers, and the best view back across to the Alhambra itself.

  5. Palace of Carlos V

The Palace of Charles V, the finest piece of Spanish Renaissance architecture, with its circular courtyard. Seen from outside: the ticket does not include the museums inside it.

  6. Church of Santa Maria de la Alhambra

The Church of Santa María de la Alhambra, built over the royal mosque of the Nasrids. Its Renaissance front is seen from the outside, with no interior access.

  7. P.º del Generalife, 1F, Granada
