Some castles have no inside
The question that decides a castle visit is not which one is prettiest. It is whether there is an interior at all — and the catalogues of this trade declare it in barely a third of listings.
A consolidated ruin, a furnished palace, a 1930s reconstruction on a medieval footprint and a castle that was never lived in are four different days out, at the same price. We read what each monument's own custodian publishes and write it down, monument by monument: where the walls are the whole visit, where the shop and the café are the only rooms you can enter, and where the furniture arrived from somewhere else entirely.
