Granada

For people who left it too late. Alhambra tickets sell out, and when the official site has none left this group still has them, with an official guide attached. Two hours, which is shorter than most tours here and deliberately so: the route is built to cover the monument at a working pace rather than to fill an afternoon. Entry is through the group gate, not the individual queue, and every visitor gets a radio headset, so the guide can talk at a normal volume in rooms where forty other groups are doing the same thing. The guide is officially accredited for Granada, which is what separates a documented account from a repeated one. In a small group the visit runs as a conversation, and questions get answered rather than deferred. The monument itself does the rest. It began as a fortress on the hill called al-Sabika and turned into a palace city of water and gardens, and it survived because the last Nasrid sultan, Boabdil, handed it over to Isabella and Ferdinand intact, ending 781 years of Muslim rule in the Iberian Peninsula. The group forms at the roundabout by car park P1 and finishes beside the Palace of Charles V.

  1. Cam. Viejo del Cementerio, 19, Granada

The group meets next to the roundabout at car park P1, Alhambra, Granada.

  2. The Alhambra

The Alhambra with an official guide from Granada: the art and architecture of the old Muslim city, and the sultans who ruled the kingdom from it. It stands on the hill called al-Sabika and began as a military fortress, then turned into a palace city of water and gardens. The architects who built it made palaces that have survived six centuries and still stop people in the doorway. Its history is Spain's too: the last Nasrid sultan, Boabdil, handed the city to the Catholic Monarchs Isabella and Ferdinand, ending 781 years of Muslim rule in the Iberian Peninsula.

  3. Palacio El Partal

Another of the best buildings on the site. The Partal palace was laid out as a small astronomical observation post. The large pool in front of it and the gardens around it make it one of the finest corners of the whole complex.

  4. Generalife

The Generalife was the estate where the Nasrid sultans went to rest, and it was meant as an image of paradise. The poet and vizier Ibn al-Jayyab called it Dar al-Mamlaka al-Sa'ida, the Royal House of Happiness. The Acequia Real runs through it, and that water fed the orchards and the aromatic planting.

  5. Alcazaba

The Alcazaba, al-qasba, is the fortress and military base of the Alhambra, built where it is to defend the Nasrid dynasty against attack from the Christian kingdoms. The views from its towers are the best on the hill.

  6. Palace of Carlos V

The Palace of Charles V is a Christian building, begun early in the 16th century, when the Renaissance arrived at the Alhambra in force. It has never been short of critics, and it remains one of the symbols of the Reconquest and the Christian victory.

  7. Pl. Algibes Alhambra, 2T, Granada

The tour ends beside the Palace of Charles V.
