El Escorial Half-Day from Madrid, the Valley as an Option to Select

Half a day out of Madrid, into the Sierra de Guadarrama, and into the part of Spanish history that the capital does not display. El Escorial is the fixed half. Philip II had it built in the 1500s, and the result is on the UNESCO list: a monastery, a palace and a royal burial place in one rectangle, put up by a king who ran an empire from a desk inside it. The Valley of the Fallen is the variable half, selected at booking rather than included by default. Choosing it adds a memorial to the dead of the Spanish Civil War, built on a scale that has kept it politically contested ever since, and the views out across the Guadarrama range from the terrace in front of it. That choice is worth making deliberately. With the Valley the day is longer and heavier; without it, the visit to El Escorial is the whole afternoon and can be taken more slowly. Either way the mountains are the setting, and they are the reason both monuments were built where they were. Tickets are non-refundable once confirmed.
