El Escorial, the Valley and Segovia's Aqueduct in One Day
A full day out of Madrid covering three places that between them run from Roman engineering to 20th-century politics. El Escorial comes first, with a 30-minute guided walk around the complex Philip II built at the height of Spain's Golden Age. Going inside the Royal Monastery is an option to add rather than part of the base price, which is worth knowing before booking. The Valley of the Fallen follows, and it is guided live, including the basilica. The monument's political and historical weight is the substance of that stop, not a footnote to it. Segovia closes the day, and it is the reason to take this one over the half-day versions. The Roman aqueduct still runs through the middle of the town, two tiers of dry-laid granite arches with no mortar holding them together, built to bring water and still standing where the traffic goes round it. A guided walk covers the medieval streets around it. The Alcázar of Segovia can be added: the castle on the rock at the end of the old town, widely said to have inspired the Disney castle. There is free time in Segovia before the return. Departure is at 9am from the Visitor Centre on Calle de San Bernardo, 15 minutes before.

- The tour departs from the Visitor Center at San Bernardo 5, Centro Commercial Gran Galeria at 9:00am every Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday and returns to the same location at the end of the day. Please arrive at least 15 minutes before departure and have your booking confirmation ready, either printed or on your mobile device.
- The tour lasts approximately 11 hours, including return travel. We recommend wearing comfortable shoes and bringing a hat, sunscreen, water, and a camera. Please note that the tour is not fully wheelchair accessible.
