Book Seven Days Ahead or You Queue, and Only Mornings Include the Square
Tian'anmen Square and the Forbidden City in a small group, with the Temple of Heaven, the Summer Palace or the hutongs available as add-ons. The tickets are pre-booked, which is the whole game in Beijing. But read this before you book: the operator can only pre-book the Forbidden City tickets if you book at least 7 days in advance. Later than that and they get you in by other means, which involves queuing. One more scheduling point: only the morning session includes going into Tian'anmen Square.

Tiananmen Square
Tian'anmen is the largest city-centre square in the world, entered on foot once security has been cleared. The group uses a travel agency pass, which gets you in quickly. From the square you see the old Qianmen Gate, the Monument to the People's Heroes and the Great Hall of the People from outside, with the history of each. Only the morning session includes the square.
The Palace Museum
Past the Tian'anmen Gate and into the Forbidden City: the Hall of Supreme Harmony, the Hall of Central Harmony and the Hall of Preserving Harmony, with the stories that belong to the Ming and the Qing. Then the Six Western Palaces, the Grand Council and the Hall of Mental Cultivation, and after that the Imperial Garden and the Palace of Earthly Tranquillity. At least 4 hours are spent inside.
Temple of Heaven
On the option that adds the Temple of Heaven: the largest and most complete of the ancient sacrificial buildings still standing in China.
