The lunch stop is the quiet joke of this itinerary. The Moulin de Fourges is a 200-year-old mill on the banks of the Epte, and the 18th-century architecture of the listed site was modelled on Marie Antoinette's hamlet at Versailles, which is where the coach goes afterwards. The morning is Giverny, about 50 miles north of Paris at the edge of Normandy, reached by air-conditioned minibus. Monet spent 43 years here, from 1883 until his death in 1926, and the house with its pink crushed brick front is as much his work as the garden. The Japanese bridge, the flowered paths and the water lily ponds are all there. The afternoon is Versailles, with a guided visit to Louis XIV's suite and the Hall of Mirrors, then free time in the gardens à la française. One thing worth timing your booking around: the Musical Fountain Show runs every weekend from April to October, and on those dates access to the gardens is included, with the fountains and groves working to music. The tour starts from the Paris TRIP Agency, 41 Avenue de la Bourdonnais, 75007. Nearest metro: École Militaire, line 8.

  2. Fondation Claude Monet

The drive from Paris to Giverny is by air-conditioned minibus, and the day starts with Claude Monet's property. It sits at the edge of Normandy, about 50 miles north of Paris, and is one of the most visited places around the capital. The gardens were made by the best known of the Impressionist painters, often called the father of Impressionism, though he was not the first to work in what became that style. The Japanese bridge stands among the flowered paths and the water lily ponds, and the house behind them, with its pink crushed brick façade, is where he spent 43 years, from 1883 until his death in 1926. After the morning there, the road goes to the banks of the Epte and lunch at the Moulin de Fourges, a 200-year-old mill. The listed 18th-century building was modelled on Marie Antoinette's hamlet at Versailles.

  3. Palace of Versailles

In the afternoon, on to Versailles, the residence of the Sun King, for a guided visit of Louis XIV's suite, the Hall of Mirrors and more. On those dates access to the gardens is included, and the fountains and groves work to music: Saturdays and Sundays from April to October, plus some additional dates (May 8, 10, 22, 29, June 5, 12, 19, 26 and August 15).
