Prague

Three hours in the afternoon, walked mostly downhill, because the climb up to the castle is done by tram. The group meets on the Old Town Square and rides up to Prague Castle, then goes inside rather than round the outside: St Vitus Cathedral, the Old Royal Palace, St George's Basilica, and the Golden Lane, which in high season becomes an optional stop rather than a fixed one. From the castle the route drops down through Malá Strana past St Nicholas, whose dome is visible from most of the city centre, then over to Kampa Island for the lock-covered bridge and the John Lennon Wall, and how that wall came to carry his name. The walk ends at Charles Bridge, which for the whole medieval period was the only way across the river, and the guide finishes with its story. The point of the afternoon is not seeing these things, which anyone can do alone. It is knowing what they were for.
