Madrid

Two hours in the Royal Palace with a guide who knows the building properly, and the option of eating afterwards. The group meets at the Ópera metro stop on the Plaza de Isabel II, in front of the Teatro Real, walks across the Plaza de Oriente, and goes in past the queue. Inside, the route takes the Throne Room, the Gala Dining Room and the private royal apartments, with the paintings that hang in them: Luca Giordano overhead, Goya on the walls. The Sabatini Gardens are on the route as well, laid out on the north side where the palace stables used to be. The tapas option is not a vague promise of a snack. Selected at booking, it sends you afterwards, on your own, to the Mercado Jamón Ibérico at Calle Mayor 80, where the tasting is Iberian ham, pork loin, salchichón, chorizo and Manchego, with bread, olive oil and a drink. Knowing exactly what arrives on the plate is worth more than most food descriptions manage. The guide carries an IBE Tours sign outside the metro station.
