A Group of Six at Most, Through the Basilica, the Gun Room and the Prisons
St Mark's Basilica and the Doge's Palace, covered properly, in a group that never exceeds six people. That ceiling is the product. Six is small enough that the guide can talk at a normal volume inside a building where sound carries badly, and small enough that a question does not hold up twenty other people. The basilica entry skips the line. The palace covers the Bridge of Sighs and the view from inside it, the prisons, the Gun Room and the Hall of the Great Council. The guide is local and works these two buildings for a living.

P.za San Marco, 1, Venezia
The meeting point is under the winged lion's column in St Mark's Square, on the side nearest the water. The guide holds a LivTours sign.
Piazza San Marco
The tour starts in St Mark's Square, where you meet the guide and the rest of a group of no more than six. Before the buildings themselves, the square: the architecture, the history, and the stories that go with both.
Basilica di San Marco
First stop is St Mark's Basilica, straight past the queue and into what Venice calls the Golden Basilica. The guide covers the interior, its history, and the different eras the building has lived through over several centuries. The gold mosaic runs across thousands of square feet of the inside, which is not a thing that exists anywhere else. An original, valid photo ID is required to enter St Mark's Basilica. Photocopies are not accepted.
Palazzo Ducale
Out of the basilica and into the Doge's Palace, the seat of the Venetian government for centuries. The guide has the stories that belong to the Doge's private apartments and the great halls, including the Hall of the Great Council. Then the rest of the building: the prison, which is exactly as grim as it sounds, the collection of weapons in the armoury, and the Bridge of Sighs, with the view out through it.
