Paris

Two castles in a day, both visited at your own speed. The audio guide is included at each site, which is the whole design of this trip: the coach handles the road and the timings, and inside the buildings nobody is waiting for you or hurrying you along. Vaux-le-Vicomte is the Baroque one, the château that Versailles is said to have been modelled on. Fontainebleau is the long one, lived in by French royalty without a break for more than seven centuries, and on the UNESCO list for it. Between the two you get the whole argument of French palace-building: one estate made in a single burst by one man's ambition, one made slowly by everybody who ever held the throne. The audio commentary covers the history and the art, and the royals it describes were an eccentric set. There is free time in the grounds at both stops, where the fountains, the lakes and the monuments are the Renaissance and Baroque idea of what a garden is for. Departure is by coach from central Paris, with the driver and the on-site time already arranged.

  3. Chateau de Vaux-le-Vicomte

The Baroque château that Versailles is said to have been modelled on. The audio guide is handed over at the door and the visit is your own: elaborate interiors, vaulted cellars, and the story of Nicolas Fouquet, finance minister to Louis XIV. Fouquet had the place designed by the best architect available, the king felt upstaged, and the minister ended up in prison. Outside there are 99 acres (40 hectares) of fountains, flowerbeds and open lawns. Lunch can be bought at the on-site café, at your own expense, before the coach leaves.

  4. Fontainebleau Forest (Foret de Fontainebleau)

At 1.15 or 1.30pm the coach heads south to Château de Fontainebleau, the only royal castle in France lived in without a break for more than 700 years.

  5. Tourist Fontainebleau

Renaissance architecture, painted ceilings, 15th-century furniture and carved woodwork, on the World Heritage list, and a real alternative to Versailles. The building is toured independently with the audio guide and the stories of the royalty who lived here.

  6. Chateau de Fontainebleau

Château de Fontainebleau. The only royal castle inhabited continuously for over seven centuries, and on the UNESCO World Heritage list. The visit is independent, with the audio guide telling the stories of the French royalty who lived here. The grounds are extensive and have lakes, so leave time to walk them.
