Vaux-le-Vicomte, Fontainebleau and a Photo Stop at Blandy-les-Tours
Two of the great châteaux of the Paris region in one day, in a small group, with a third castle thrown in through the window. Vaux-le-Vicomte comes first, and it is where the French formal garden was invented. Nicolas Fouquet, finance minister to Louis XIV, hired the best architect, the best painter and the best gardener in France at the same time and let them build one estate together. The result was so good it ruined him. Louis XIV saw it, and the men who made it went on to build Versailles. On the road to Fontainebleau the minibus pulls over at Blandy-les-Tours, a medieval castle with its towers still up. The stop is outside, for photographs, and it costs the day nothing while adding four centuries to it. Fontainebleau closes the afternoon. Kings and emperors lived here for more than seven hundred years, each of them adding rooms, which is why the palace reads less as one building than as a pile of reigns. Lunch is taken in the town beforehand, at a café or a bakery, and is not included in the price.

Chateau de Vaux-le-Vicomte
Built for Nicolas Fouquet, finance minister to Louis XIV, who put the three best men in France on the same job: the architect Louis Le Vau, the painter and interior designer Charles Le Brun, and André Le Nôtre, the father of the French garden. The castle and gardens they produced were the finest in the country. The TV series Versailles was filmed here.
