Versailles

Ninety minutes with a guide, and two pieces of practical advice that change what the day costs and how it feels. The first is the gardens. From November to March they are free, and from April to October, during the Musical and Fountain Show season, they need a separate ticket. Booking in winter is therefore cheaper than most people assume. The second is the hour. The operator recommends an afternoon slot, because Versailles fills up in the morning, and you can pick the start time that suits you. The guided route covers the State Apartments, the King's Bedroom and the Hall of Mirrors, with Louis XIV, Marie Antoinette and the events that ended their world. Afterwards you can stay on in the palace as long as you like. One rule to keep in mind: once you leave the building, you cannot go back in. Do not go straight to the palace. Meet at the GetYourGuide office, 10 Av. du Général de Gaulle, 78000 Versailles, five minutes' walk from the gates.
