Granada

Skip-the-line entry to the Alhambra with a licensed guide, and a ticket that does not expire when the guide says goodbye. The guided part covers the Nasrid Palaces, the Palace of Charles V and the Generalife. Then the group is released into the Alcazaba, and you can stay inside the complex until it closes. That single arrangement is worth more than an extra hour of commentary: you get the explanation while it is useful, then the run of the site while it is emptying. What the guide adds is the reading of the decoration. The Nasrid Palaces are covered in Arabic inscriptions, and they are not ornament, they are text: poetry about the building, verses about water, statements about who ruled and by what right. Once someone tells you that the walls are talking, the palaces stop being pretty and start being an argument. The Palace of Charles V makes the other half of the case in Renaissance stone, and the Generalife is what the rulers built to get away from both. The Alcazaba is the oldest part, with the defensive walls and the views over Granada, and it is the right place to be left alone.

The Nasrid Palaces are entered at the time stamped on the ticket, and it is the hardest part of the site to get into.
