Six centuries old, and the surprise is how much of it is still there. Plaster carved in the 14th century, tilework laid before Granada fell, fountains that have not stopped running. Most Islamic architecture of this rank survives in fragments. The Alhambra survives as rooms you can stand in. The visit is guided throughout, and the guide works from the stories rather than the dates: the mysteries, the legends, and the Taifa kingdoms that came before the Nasrids moved their court to Granada in the middle of the 13th century. The legends have a specific source. Washington Irving stayed here and wrote Tales of the Alhambra inside one of these rooms, and that book is the reason the palace was rescued from ruin rather than quarried for stone. Half the ghost stories told on this hill were written down by an American diplomat with a notebook, and they have been retold ever since. Skip-the-line access is included, which at a monument with timed entry and a daily cap is the practical half of the booking. The tickets are non-refundable once confirmed.
