Basilica, Palace and the Rialto, with the Gondola as an Upgrade
St Mark's Basilica first, where the gold mosaics and the painted work carry several centuries of the city's history, taken with a local guide. Then the Doge's Palace, which is where the art and the government of Venice occupied the same rooms. The walk carries on into the centre and out to the Rialto Bridge, so the day is not confined to one square. The gondola is an upgrade rather than part of the standard price, and it is worth deciding on before you book rather than at the landing stage.
