Forty Minutes on the Book, Fifty Round the Castle, No Gardens Until 2027

A guided walk through the Book of Kells, the Old Library at Trinity College and Dublin Castle, with the time at each stop set out in advance rather than left vague. The group meets at the Edmund Burke statue in the centre of Dublin. The manuscript comes first. It is over 1,200 years old, a Latin text of the four gospels, and 11th-century archives called it the most precious object in the western world. The guide spends about 40 minutes on it: where it came from, the symbolism worked into the pages, the painting technique behind it, and the part monks and Vikings both played in the fact that it survived at all. Then about 10 minutes in the Trinity shop. A short stop at the Molly Malone statue follows, for the story behind her. Then Dublin Castle, built in the 13th century on a Viking settlement, and used since as a fortress, a prison, a treasury, a court and the seat of English power in Ireland. The walk takes 50 minutes and goes right round the outside, past the Record and Octagonal Towers. The whole thing runs about 3 hours and finishes near the castle. Two things to know before booking: the order of the stops can change, and the castle gardens are closed to the public until 31 December 2026.
