Changing of the Guard from Green Park to Parliament Square
The ceremony does not happen in one place, and this walk is built around that. It starts at Green Park, picks up the guard change at St James's Palace, follows it to Buckingham Palace for the end, and carries on to Parliament Square. Standing outside the palace railings is the common mistake: the crowd gets there first and the view goes with it. Here the guide moves you between positions as the King's foot guards march, in red tunics and bearskin hats, and explains what each stage of the handover is. The rest of the route covers the royal landmarks around it: Buckingham Palace, St James's Palace, which was Henry VIII's, Clarence House, St James's Park, Horse Guards Parade, Whitehall and Westminster Abbey. It ends in Parliament Square, opposite Big Ben and next to Westminster Underground Station, which is a useful place to be left. Meet outside Green Park Underground station, using the Green Park exit. The guide waits by the Constance Fund fountain of Diana, London SW1A 1RD.
