Chambord, Chenonceau and Lunch Inside Family-Owned Château de Villesavin

Two of the Loire's most famous châteaux in one day, and a third one that almost nobody books. Chambord and Chenonceau are the names everyone arrives with, and a local guide takes the group through both, working from the private lives of the French kings who lived in them rather than from a list of dates. The anecdotes are the point: what people actually did in these rooms, told by someone who knows the buildings well enough to be funny about them. The route also picks up panoramic views away from the crowd, which is a different Loire from the one on the postcards. Between the two, lunch. Not in a restaurant on a coach route, but inside Villesavin, a smaller château that is privately owned and still in the hands of a family. A traditional French lunch is served there. The difference is not the food, it is the scale: after a morning in rooms built to impress an entire court, you eat in a house that was built for people to live in, and the contrast lands better than any explanation.
