First Written Down in 1331, Rosenau Was Built Against the Tartars
A day from Brașov with three stops: the bear sanctuary at Zărnești, Bran Castle, and Râșnov Fortress. Zărnești is the largest brown bear sanctuary in the world, and it stays busy in every season. The bears live in forest enclosures and are watched from a walkway a few steps away, eating and moving about as they would in the wild. Photographs are allowed. Bran Castle follows, where the history and the myth sit side by side and the visit takes in both. Râșnov closes the day, and it is worth knowing what it is. Rosenau in German, the fortress stands on a rock 650 feet above the town, in the Carpathians. It first appears in a document in 1331; the Teutonic Knights built it against Tartar raids and the Saxon population later enlarged it. Restoration work is under way inside, so the interior cannot be entered at present. The grounds and the garden are open, and the exterior can be walked round.

Libearty Bear Sanctuary Zarnesti
The largest brown bear sanctuary in the world, at Zărnești, and busy in every season. The bears are watched from a walkway a few steps away, in forest enclosures rather than cages, eating and moving about as they would in the wild. Photographs are allowed, and the stop works as well for children as for adults.

Rasnov Citadel: Garden and Panoramic View
The interior is closed for maintenance and restoration; the grounds and garden are open and the exterior can be walked round. Rosenau in German, the fortress stands on a rocky hilltop in the Carpathians, 650 feet above the town of Râșnov. It is first mentioned in a document of 1331, built by the Teutonic Knights against Tartar raids and later enlarged by the local Saxons.
