Nine Hours, Four Imperial Sites, and the Pearl Market in Between
Nine hours and four of the largest sites in Beijing: Tian'anmen Square, the Forbidden City, the Temple of Heaven and the Summer Palace, with an English-speaking guide. The distances between them are considerable, and the bus rides are part of the day rather than dead time. Lunch is a traditional Chinese meal, and there is a stop at the Pearl Market for anyone who wants to buy something. One practical point: pickup and drop-off are from hotels inside the 4th Ring Road.

Tiananmen Square
The Tian'anmen gate, built in 1415, is the main entrance to the Forbidden City, and the square in front of it covers more than 40 hectares, which puts it among the largest in the world. The buildings around it are where the modern history of the country was staged.
The Palace Museum
The Forbidden City was begun in 1406 and served as the imperial palace through the Ming and the Qing. It covers more than 180 acres, and the halls inside hold antiques and treasures from the length of Chinese history.
Temple of Heaven
Built in 1420, the Temple of Heaven is where the emperor went to pray for a good harvest. It is the largest temple and altar complex in China, and the clearest surviving example of Ming and Qing religious architecture.
Summer Palace
The Summer Palace was built in 1750, under the Qing. It is the largest royal park in the country and the best preserved. The visit takes in the grounds, the temples and the painted corridor, the longest gallery of its kind in the world.
