Private Guide, Public Subway, and a 7:30 PM Deadline for the Square
A private guide for four hours across Tian'anmen Square and the Forbidden City, with all the entrance fees in the price. The saving is in the transport. Instead of a private car, the guide takes you by public transport, which in Beijing is fast, cheap and goes where the traffic does not. The booking deadlines matter here more than the itinerary. Tian'anmen Square has to be reserved by 7:30 pm Beijing time the day before; book later and the reservation covers the Forbidden City only. And the Forbidden City itself caps tickets daily, so a week ahead is the sensible margin.

Tiananmen Square
The accredited guide meets you in your hotel lobby and travels with you by subway to Tian'anmen Square, the largest city-centre square in the world. On it are Chairman Mao's Mausoleum, where his body is kept, the Great Hall of the People, the National Museum and the Monument to the People's Heroes, and the guide explains what you are looking at. Note: Tian'anmen Square must be reserved in advance. To get both the square and the Palace Museum, reserve by 7:30 pm Beijing time the day before. Later reservations are valid for the Forbidden City only.
The Palace Museum
The Forbidden City was the imperial palace of the Ming and the Qing, first built in 1420 under the Ming. It is the largest and best-preserved palace complex left in the world, and 24 emperors lived and governed inside it. Note: book a week ahead. The Forbidden City limits tickets daily and they sell out in advance.
