Roast Duck for Lunch, and the Hunt for the Palace's Missing Half Room

Tiananmen Square
Meet the private guide and driver in your hotel lobby at 8:00 in the morning, and head for Tian'anmen Square at the centre of Beijing: the Tian'anmen Gate with the portrait of Chairman Mao, the national flag, the National Museum of China, the Great Hall of the People and the Monument to the People's Heroes, with the guide covering both the old history and the recent.
The Palace Museum
Then the Forbidden City, on the UNESCO list, a royal palace 600 years old, and the rooms 24 emperors lived in. The guide covers the daily life of the emperors and the stories of the concubines, and takes you looking for the missing half room, the odd half in the palace's famous 9,999 and a half.
Temple of Heaven
Next the Temple of Heaven, the largest complex of worship buildings in the world, and now also where retired Beijingers spend their mornings, which is half of what makes the place worth walking.
Summer Palace
In the afternoon, the Summer Palace, the best preserved of the imperial gardens. It was built in 1750, burnt in 1860 and rebuilt in 1888. The guide explains why the Empress Dowager Cixi loved it enough to spend what she spent putting it back, and what her life there looked like: her opera house, the rooms built for her birthday celebrations, the longest painted corridor in the world, and Kunming Lake.
