Prague

Five hours out of Prague to Karlštejn, travelling in an open vintage car, which turns the hour on the road into part of the day rather than dead time. Pickup is from any hotel in the centre of Prague. The drive runs an hour through the countryside to the castle, and the same back at the end. That leaves three hours at Karlštejn, enough for the castle, the grounds around it and a meal at a local restaurant without hurrying any of the three. Charles IV had the castle built in 1348 to hold the royal treasure and the crown jewels, and the chapel inside is the reason it still matters: the largest portrait gallery of Czech rulers anywhere, and a replica of the crown of St Wenceslas.
