Sintra

Half a day in Sintra that begins in Sintra. The group meets at the station, not at a pickup point in Lisbon, so the hours go on the two monuments instead of on the road. The Pena Palace is the first of them, and the Quinta da Regaleira the second, with the Initiation Well that is the reason most people put the estate on their list. Sintra's historic centre sits between the two. The group is small and the guide is local, which is the arrangement independent travellers tend to want: someone who knows the ground, and no coach party to follow. Departures run in the morning and in the afternoon. Either way the other half of the day is yours, for Cascais, for Lisbon, or for nothing in particular.

  1. Largo Vasco da Gama 7, Sintra

Meet your guide outside the Café Pérola da Portela, in front of the south exit of Portela de Sintra station, on the left as you arrive from Lisbon. Coming from Lisbon, get off at Portela de Sintra, not at Sintra. The guide waits outside the café.

  2. Park and National Palace of Pena

The Pena Palace and its park, the colourful landmark on the ridge above Sintra and a UNESCO listed site. Romantic architecture, terraces and a view that runs to the horizon. The guided visit takes in the terraces, the historic chapel and a good stretch of the park, along with the vision King Ferdinand II had for the place and the story of how it was built. The guide handles the architectural detail and the symbolism worked into it. The tour ends here, so you can stay in the park at your own pace or walk back down to the historic centre when you feel like it.

  3. Centro Historico de Sintra

A short stop in the historic centre, around 15 minutes free, then a 15-minute guided walk through the town to the Quinta da Regaleira. Because the tour ends at Regaleira, you can come back to the centre afterwards and stay as long as you want, for lunch, for the shops, or for the Travesseiros and Queijadas Sintra is known for.

  4. Quinta da Regaleira

The Quinta da Regaleira, the most enigmatic property in Portugal. Gardens laid out as puzzles, grottoes hidden under them, and the Initiation Well, dense with symbolism. History, art and mysticism on the same estate, in the romantic part of Sintra.

    Costo extra

  5. The Palace of Monteiro the Millionaire, Sintra

The tour ends at the Quinta da Regaleira. You can stay on in the estate or walk the 15 minutes or so back to Sintra's historic centre.
