The Ticket Lasts 24 Hours, and Boboli Is What Versailles Copied
Two hours in a small group across the Pitti Palace and the Boboli Gardens, and a ticket that stays valid for twenty-four. The Pitti was built for the Pitti family and bought by the Medici in 1549. Inside is the Palatine Gallery, with Raphael, Titian and Caravaggio hung the way a private collection was hung rather than the way a museum arranges one. Then the Boboli Gardens, which were laid out as a retreat for the family and became the model that the royal gardens of Europe copied, Versailles among them. The Buontalenti Grotto, the Fountain of Neptune and the Amphitheatre are all on the route. Because the ticket runs for a full day, the guided part is a start rather than the whole visit: you can sit in the gardens afterwards, or come back tomorrow morning and finish the museum properly.

Palazzo Pitti
The visit starts at the Pitti Palace, the enormous Renaissance residence the Medici bought in 1549. It was built in the 15th century for the Pitti family, and under the Medici it became the statement of what they had become.
Galleria Palatina in Palazzo Pitti
With the guide, through the grandest rooms and into the Palatine Gallery. Raphael, Titian and Caravaggio are all here, and Raphael's Madonna della Seggiola is the picture people stop in front of. The rooms carry frescoes and paintings on every available surface, which was deliberate: the horror vacui hang tells you as much about the Medici as the individual works do.
Giardino di Boboli
Then the Boboli Gardens, an outdoor museum and one of the defining works of Italian garden design. They were laid out as a Medici retreat and became the prototype that the royal gardens of Europe followed, Versailles included. Along the way: the Buontalenti Grotto, the Fountain of Neptune and the Amphitheatre, each of them a piece of built landscape rather than planting.
