Priority entry to the Palazzo Pitti, the residence of the Medici and one of the buildings the Florentine Renaissance is measured by, with no guide and no group to keep up with. Inside: the Palatine Gallery, with Raphael, Titian and Rubens hung in the royal rooms rather than in a gallery, and then the Royal Apartments, where the political and cultural weight of the family is easier to feel than to read about. The reserved entry handles the arrival. Everything after that is at your own speed, which is the argument for a self-guided visit in a building this size. One thing to check when booking: whether your option includes the Boboli Gardens. Not all of them do.

  1. Palazzo Pitti

  2. Palazzo Pitti

Inside the Palazzo Pitti, one of the largest Renaissance palaces in Florence and the home of the Medici. The museums include the Palatine Gallery, with Raphael, Titian and Rubens in the royal apartments themselves, along with the Royal Apartments, the Gallery of Modern Art and the Museum of Costume and Fashion, which between them cover several centuries of Italian art. The Boboli Gardens, if your option includes them, are a defining work of Italian garden design, with fountains, sculpture and the view back over Florence. Art, history and architecture in one building, which is why the Pitti works as well for a first visit to Florence as for a fifth.
