Pietro da Cortona's Planetary Rooms and the King of Italy's Apartments
The grand-ducal residence of the Medici, their private collection of paintings, and the rooms it hangs in, which are as worked over as anything on the walls. The route also takes the royal apartments next to the gallery, which were the residence of the King of Italy after the Medici were long gone. Most Pitti visits stop before that door.

Palazzo Pitti
A guided visit inside the palace, built in the 15th century and later bought by the Medici, who made it their residence. The guide takes the group through the Palatine Gallery.
Palazzo Pitti
The collection is the private one of the Grand Dukes, and it hangs in the official staterooms on the first floor of the Pitti. With a local guide: dozens of Renaissance paintings, including work by Botticelli, Titian, Rubens and Caravaggio, and by Italian and European painters of the 15th to 17th centuries, through the Planetary Rooms. Pietro da Cortona designed those rooms, and the frescoes and stucco he covered them in are not a neutral background: the setting and the pictures were built to work on each other. The royal apartments come at the end.
Palazzo Pitti
The visit takes about an hour and a half, which is enough time to take the collection in without hurrying, and you are free to go back afterwards to anything you want to see again. Skip-the-line access is included.
