Ninety Minutes Behind a Lantern, and the Narrator Is in Costume
An evening walk of ninety minutes through the castle district, led by a storyteller in a Gothic costume carrying a lantern. The subject is alchemy and the legends attached to these streets, and the route goes for the corners rather than the monuments: hidden lanes, courtyards, the places where men worked at the transmutation of metals by candlelight and told their patrons it was going well. Along the way the Strahov monastery, the Czernin Palace, which is the largest Baroque palace in Prague, and Nový Svět, the New World, one of the least-known streets in the old city and once home to one of the most famous alchemists in Europe. St Vitus Cathedral is seen at night, with its gargoyles picked out against the dark, and the castle courtyards with it. The group meets at the Pohořelec tram stop, in front of the statue of Tycho Brahe and Johannes Kepler, and the walk ends down in Lesser Town, below the castle.
