LisbonSintra has more to see than a day holds, and this tour deals with that honestly: six monuments are proposed, you choose three, and the private guide builds the day around your choice. The six are the Pena Palace, the Quinta da Regaleira, the Monserrate Palace, the Sintra National Palace, the Moorish Castle and the historic centre. Any three of them make a full and different day. Pena and Regaleira are the obvious pair; Monserrate is a botanical garden with a palace in it and half the visitors; the Moorish Castle is a walk along a ridge with the whole coast underneath. Selecting the skip-the-line option puts the Pena Palace tickets in the price. The guide gives the history and the architecture as you go and then lets you walk the monuments themselves at your own pace, which on a private booking is the sensible division of labour. The drive continues through the national park to Cabo da Roca, the western end of continental Europe, and ends at Cascais, a resort for more than a century and a fishing port for several thousand years before that. There is an hour of free time in the village of Sintra for lunch and pastries.

Quinta da Regaleira
The Quinta da Regaleira, also UNESCO-listed, with its carved buildings, its gardens and a Gothic register that runs through the whole estate. The caves, the hidden wells and the decoration all come out of the owner's interest in Freemasonry, the Templars and the Rosicrucians. (Suggested monument)

Parque e Palacio de Monserrate
Monserrate is a jungle of exotic trees and flowering shrubs around a palace. The site goes back to the time of the Moors, and it takes its name from a small 16th-century chapel dedicated to Our Lady of Montserrat, in Catalonia. (Suggested monument)

Centro Historico de Sintra
Before the road to Cabo da Roca there is time to walk the historic centre of Sintra. An hour of free time, which is enough for lunch and for the local pastries.
Park and National Palace of Pena
The 19th-century Romantic palace on top of the mountain, with a view that runs for miles and reaches the ocean. It is also the best place in Sintra to take photographs. (Suggested monument)

Sintra National Palace
In the middle of the village, two conical chimneys rise over the royal palace. It was the favourite summer residence of the court and stayed in use by Portuguese royalty until the 1980s. Rebuilt piece by piece over centuries, it ended up as a mixture of every style that passed through. (Suggested monument)

Castelo dos Mouros

Cabo da Roca closes the inland part of the day: the westernmost point of continental Europe, and a good place to stand in the wind.
Cascais
Cascais has been a holiday resort for more than a century, and it shows in the villas along the shore. The sheltered sandy bay was a fishing port in prehistory.
