Paris

The lunch break here is on the water: La Flotille sits at the head of the Grand Canal, reached on foot along the promenade that runs down from the palace. The three-course meal is bought separately, not included, which is worth knowing before you book. The day is private, in a Mercedes-Benz with WiFi, with pickup from any hotel or private residence in Paris. A licensed guide takes the palace: the State Apartments of Louis XIV and the Hall of Mirrors, which the guide will explain as a statement of French political, economic and artistic power rather than as decoration. After the palace there is free time in the French gardens and their 55 fountains, then the walk down to lunch. The afternoon covers the Trianons. The Grand Trianon is built of pastel-pink marble, and it exists for a plain reason: the main palace filled with people, and the Sun King wanted somewhere to get away from them. The Queen's Hamlet is a stylised Norman village and working farm, built for Marie Antoinette to retreat to with her closest friends. The operator can also meet clients at Versailles itself rather than in Paris.

  1. Palace of Versailles

A licensed guide takes you through the best of Versailles, the palace of the Sun King. The State Apartments of Louis XIV and the Hall of Mirrors are the core of the visit.

  2. La Galerie des Glaces

The Hall of Mirrors is a statement of French political, economic and artistic power. Your guide will explain why it was built to say that.

  3. Jardins du Chateau de Versailles

Out of the palace, with free time in the French-style gardens and their 55 fountains.

  4. The Grand Trianon

The lunch break is at La Flotille, well placed at the Grand Canal, with a three-course meal bought separately. Afterwards your guide takes you to the Grand Trianon, which Louis XIV used as a private palace. The main palace had filled with people over the years, and the Sun King wanted somewhere to escape them. The Grand Trianon, built of pastel-pink marble, is what he got.

  5. Le Petit Trianon

There is also the Queen's Hamlet, a stylised Norman village and farm built for Marie Antoinette, where she retreated with her closest friends for a rustic life at close quarters.

  6. Le Hameau De La Reine

The Queen's Hamlet: a stylised Norman village and farm, built so that Marie Antoinette could withdraw there with a few friends.
