Lisbon

Worth settling first, because it is the thing that separates this day from the others: the Quinta da Regaleira is visited properly, and the Pena Palace is seen from the outside. That trade is deliberate and it is not a bad one. Regaleira is the more interesting building to walk through. It is an estate of exotic gardens, lakes, waterfalls and tunnels, built by an owner who filled it with Masonic and alchemical symbolism, and at its centre is the Initiation Well: a spiral staircase sunk into the ground, dry, lit from the top, that visitors descend and then leave through a cave. Pena is spectacular from the terrace and mostly queue on the inside. The tickets are bought in advance, so no part of the day is spent at a booth. The rest runs down to the coast. Cabo da Roca, the western end of Europe, cliff and lighthouse. The beach at Guincho, which is where Lisbon's surfers and kitesurfers go when the wind is up. Then Cascais, its marina and its small beaches. Lunch is taken with the group at Colares, between the palaces and the sea.
