Sintra as Mons Lunae, Pena and the Inverted Tower, with Hotel Pickup in Lisbon
Both of the main monuments guided from the inside, on the same day, in a group of eight, with the van collecting you at your hotel in central Lisbon. The Romans called this range Mons Lunae, the mountain of the moon, and Monte da Lua is still what the Portuguese call it. The mysticism attached to the place has never quite worn off. The day starts at the Pena Palace, guided, the fairytale one on the ridge. Then the narrow streets of the village of Sintra, with free time for lunch and for a travesseiro at Piriquita, the pastry shop everyone in the region names first. The afternoon is the Quinta da Regaleira, also guided: the Initiatic Well, the exotic gardens, the caves and an architecture built on Masonic symbolism. After that the route crosses the mountain, through the villages on its flanks, out to Cabo da Roca and the westernmost point of continental Europe. Access at the ticket offices is skip the line, the group is capped at eight, and pickup is at your hotel in the centre of Lisbon.
