The Pena Palace ticket is chosen by you at booking, in three versions: the interior rooms, the terraces and park with the viewpoints, or no ticket at all. Those are genuinely different days, and different prices, and most operators decide for you. The Quinta da Regaleira is the same story told plainly. It is not included, it sells out days in advance, and if you want it you book the 11.30 slot yourself on the official site. Failing that, the exterior can still be walked past. That is a better instruction than a promise nobody can keep. The rest: the village of Sintra, with the National Palace and the travesseiros; Cabo da Roca, the western end of mainland Europe; Cascais; and a pass through Estoril, which was full of exiled kings and working spies during the Second World War and gave Ian Fleming rather a lot of material. Guiding alternates with free time to walk on your own. Pickup and drop-off are in central Lisbon, with the return around 4.30pm.

Park and National Palace of Pena
The Pena Palace terraces and park, among the best surviving 19th-century Romantic buildings in Europe. It stands at over 500 metres, the second-highest point in the Serra de Sintra, and the views match the architecture. Ferdinand II, the artist king, bought the property and built a castle and a park around it, planted with 500 species from all over the world. Manueline and Moorish forms run through the palace together. Ticket options: terraces and viewpoints, or the interior rooms.
Centro Historico de Sintra
In the centre of Sintra you can stay in the village, look at the National Palace, or walk up to Regaleira (ticket not included). Staying is a reasonable choice: the narrow streets of the old town, a coffee, and a travesseiro from one of the pastry shops.
Quinta da Regaleira
Regaleira is a 19th-century villa in the centre of Sintra, bought by a Portuguese businessman with an interest in Freemasonry and the Templars, who turned it into a palace surrounded by gardens, lakes, caves and constructions built around the symbolism of secret societies. Romantic, neo-Gothic and Manueline all at once. To go inside, book the 11h30 slot yourself on the official shop, well ahead: it sells out. If you cannot get a slot the visit is not possible, but you can still see it from outside.

Sintra National Palace
The Sintra National Palace is one of the most important royal palaces in Portugal, begun by the Moors in the 12th century and extended by successive monarchs. It was a centre of government during the discoveries of the 15th and 16th centuries, and it holds the most important collection of Moorish tilework in the country.
Cabo Da Roca
A stop at Cabo da Roca, the westernmost point of continental Europe, for photographs and air after the visits in Sintra.
Centro Historico de Cascais
Cascais is half fishing town, half resort: the place where Portuguese kings and queens spent part of their summers, with the harbour still working underneath it.
Estoril
A quick look at Estoril, where exiled royalty lived and spies met during the Second World War, and where Ian Fleming found a good deal of his material.
