Venice

The two buildings everyone comes to Venice for, St Mark's Basilica and the Doge's Palace, with a guide who is working for your group and nobody else. What that buys is the pace and the questions. You stop where you want to stop, and anything the guide says can be followed up rather than left behind. Both entries skip the line. Inside the basilica, tens of thousands of square feet of gold mosaic. Inside the palace, the Bridge of Sighs, the prisons, the Gun Room and the Hall of the Great Council. One thing to sort out before you go: St Mark's Basilica requires an original, valid photo ID at the entrance. Photocopies are not accepted, and there is no way around it at the door.

What's included

  • Private Tour Guide
  • Exclusive Skip the Line Access to Doge's Palace
  • Exclusive Skip the Line Access into Saint Mark's Basilica

  1. P.zt San Marco, Venezia

The meeting point is under the winged lion's column in St Mark's Square, on the side nearest the water. The guide holds a LivTours sign.

  2. Piazza San Marco

The tour starts in Piazza San Marco, where you meet your private guide. Before the two buildings, the square itself: its architecture, its history and the stories attached to it, which are better than the postcards suggest.

  3. Basilica di San Marco

The first stop is St Mark's Basilica, entered straight past the long queue into what is also called the Golden Basilica. The guide takes you through the interior, its history, and the several different eras this building has come through in its centuries of existence. The gold mosaic covers thousands of square feet of the inside, wall and ceiling, and there is nowhere else like it. An original, valid photo ID is required to enter St Mark's Basilica. Photocopies are not accepted.

  4. Palazzo Ducale

Out of the basilica and into the Doge's Palace, again past the line, into what was the seat of the Venetian government for centuries. The guide has the stories that go with the Doge's private apartments and the great halls, the Hall of the Great Council among them. Then the other half of the building: the prison, dark and grim, and the collection of weapons in the armoury, before the Bridge of Sighs and the view from inside it.

  5. Ponte dei Sospiri

After the armoury, the Bridge of Sighs, and the view through its stone lattice.

  6. P.zt San Marco, Venezia
