St Mark's Basilica After Hours, Empty, with the Crypt Below It

VeniceSt Mark's Basilica after it has closed to the public, which is a different building from the one people queue for. Inside are the mosaics and the Byzantine altarpiece, and then the crypt, where St Mark himself is believed to lie. The Doge's Palace can be added at booking, as a late entry: the Higher Council Hall, the Doge's apartments and the Bridge of Sighs. One practical note, and the operator is straight about it: there can be a gap of up to an hour between the palace visit and the after-hours entry to the basilica, because the palace has been closing earlier. If that happens, the guide will point you at somewhere to sit and have a drink in the meantime.

Arrive 15 minutes before the start. The guide holds a green Walks sign. The meeting point is the Correr Museum, Piazza San Marco 52, under the portico just outside the museum entrance.

Basilica di San Marco
The best way to see St Mark's Basilica is with nobody else in it. Inside, the difference is immediate. No standing shoulder to shoulder, no flashes going off every two seconds, no noise. Just your group, the guide and the custodian, in a building that was designed to be experienced quietly.
Palazzo Ducale
The Doge's Palace is only included if you book the St Mark's with Doge's Palace option. With that option, the visit covers the armoury, the New Prisons, the council rooms and the frescoes. The group is 15 people or fewer and enters at the last admission of the day, which is when the most visited building in Venice is finally quiet.
Torre dell'Orologio
The Torre dell'Orologio is included with the Doge's Palace option only.
The Bridge of sights visit is included with the Doge Palace…
The Bridge of Sighs is included with the Doge's Palace option only. The guided route covers the armoury and the prisons, and finishes inside the Bridge of Sighs, where the guide will explain why the name is a good deal less romantic than it sounds.
