Dublin
Skip the line

A walking tour of central Dublin with timed priority entry at each stop, which is what keeps the day moving through three buildings that all queue badly. It begins at St Patrick's Cathedral and its garden, with the life of Ireland's patron saint and the writers attached to the place. Then Trinity College, founded in 1592 by Elizabeth I, and priority timed entry to the Book of Kells. The walk finishes at Dublin Castle, 13th century, and its gardens. One option worth knowing about: on the six-hour Ultimate Full Day version, the tour ends inside the Guinness Storehouse.

  1. Bull Alley St, Dublin

Meeting time: 15 minutes before the scheduled start. Place: St Patrick's Garden, Bull Alley Street, Dublin. Point: the fountain in the middle of the garden.

  2. Saint Patrick's Cathedral

Skip-the-line access to the cathedral and its gardens, and a full tour of both. The guide covers Jonathan Swift, who was Dean of St Patrick's, and Bram Stoker, who wrote Dracula and studied at Trinity.

  3. Dublin Castle

Then Dublin Castle. It was built in the 13th century on ground the Vikings had settled, and it worked as a fortress, a prison, a treasury, a court and the seat of English administration in Ireland for 700 years. It was rebuilt in the 17th, 18th, 19th and 20th centuries, which is why it reads as several buildings at once. This is a guided tour of the exterior: the original 13th-century Record and Octagonal Towers, the Upper and Lower State Yards and the architecture around them. The Castle Gardens are included, and they are the place where the first Vikings landed in Dublin in 795 AD. The lawn there now is landscaped on Celtic lines.

  4. Molly Malone Statue

The Molly Malone statue, where the guide introduces Dublin's own heroine and her song. Molly and her barrow have become one of the standing images of the city, and Cockles and Mussels is close to an unofficial anthem for it.

  5. The Book of Kells Experience

The Book of Kells, made in the 9th century and called in the Annals of Ulster in 1007 the most precious object in the western world. Twelve hundred years later it is still the standard against which medieval illumination is measured. The guide works through the ornament, the symbolism packed into it, and the case for it as a work of art.

  6. Trinity College Dublin

After the Book of Kells and the library, 10 minutes in the shop.

  7. Trinity College, The University of Dublin Trinity College, College Green, South-East Inner City, Dublin

Guests who booked the upgrade, the six-hour Ultimate Full Day Dublin with the Guinness Storehouse included, finish inside the Storehouse.
