Beijing

Two versions of the same itinerary, one half a day and one a full one. The half-day option is the Temple of Heaven alone: the imperial architecture, the courtyards and the old cypress woods around them, and what the Ming and Qing sacrifices actually involved. Enough for anyone with an afternoon rather than a day. The full day adds the Yonghe Lama Temple and the Summer Palace, with Peking duck for lunch. That combination puts three quite different things in a row: a place built for state ritual, a working Tibetan Buddhist monastery, and a royal park built for pleasure.

  2. Temple of Heaven

Two hours at the clearest surviving example of Chinese ritual architecture: what it was for, how it is designed, and the quiet that the cypress woods keep around it. The guide covers the sacrifices the emperors made here to heaven.

  3. Lama Temple (Yonghegong)

A guided visit to the Yonghe Lama Temple, the most important Tibetan Buddhist monastery in Beijing, built in a mix of Han and Tibetan styles. The Maitreya Buddha inside stands 18 metres and was carved from a single sandalwood trunk.

  4. Summer Palace

Two and a half hours at the Summer Palace, the reference work of Chinese landscape gardening: palaces, pavilions, gardens and lakes across more than 2.9 square kilometres. The guide picks the routes and the stories worth having.
