The 343 Firefighters Remembered Above Kinsale, and a Taxi for Three
A private day around Cork in a modern taxi, which is the point: it goes where the coaches cannot, and it moves on when you say so rather than when a schedule says so. The car takes four, though three travel comfortably. Blarney Castle is the first stop, a 15th-century stronghold with the stone at the top of it and gardens to walk afterwards. Then Kinsale, the coloured streets and the small ones behind them, and out to the cliffs for the view. The stop most visitors do not expect is the Garden of Remembrance, dedicated to the 343 firefighters who died in the World Trade Center on 11 September 2001. It is a quiet field on an Irish hillside, and it is one of the reasons this itinerary is worth more than the sum of its castles. The day finishes at Cobh, with the cathedral and the drive round the harbour.
