VeniceA full day that starts on the square and ends out in the lagoon. The morning is timed-entry tickets and guided visits to St Mark's Basilica and the Doge's Palace: the golden mosaics, the great halls, the Golden Staircase and the Bridge of Sighs, and the machinery of the Venetian Republic behind all of it. Then a shared gondola, and a short lunch break near St Mark's Square. The afternoon is the part most Venice days never reach. A private boat, reserved for the group, out to Murano for a glassblowing demonstration in a working studio, and on to Burano for the lace and the painted houses. A guide in the morning, a tour leader for the islands, and the transport between them arranged, so the day covers Venice on foot, on the canals and across the lagoon.

P.za San Marco, Venezia
Arrive 15 minutes early. Between the two big columns in St Mark's Square, the columns of San Marco and San Teodoro, on the south side near the water. The guide holds a The Tour Guy sign.
Basilica di San Marco
Into St Mark's Basilica on a timed-entry ticket, with the guide, in one of the most important churches in Venice. The golden mosaics, and how relics, art and politics between them produced this Byzantine building.
Palazzo Ducale
Then the Doge's Palace, again on a timed-entry ticket and with a guide. The great halls and the Renaissance painting in them, the Golden Staircase, and the Bridge of Sighs, with the guide on what this building was for when Venice was still a republic.
Venice
Next, a shared gondola for a 30-minute ride through the canals, under the old bridges and along the buildings, with a professional gondolier on the oar.
Venice
A short lunch break near St Mark's Square. Lunch is at your own expense, and the guide can point you somewhere decent nearby.
Isola di Murano
Meet the afternoon tour leader and board a private boat reserved for the group. Out across the Venetian lagoon towards Murano, with the Venice skyline receding behind you. Murano is the glass island. The visit includes a working studio and a glassblowing demonstration, then free time to buy Murano glass or walk the town before the next stop.
Burano
On by boat to Burano, with its painted houses and its lacemaking. A lacemaking demonstration with local artisans, then free time for photographs and for the streets. The private boat brings the group back to Venice. The day ends near St Mark's Square, about two blocks from the Doge's Palace, at the same point the Murano and Burano boat leaves from.
