Three Hours on Two Buildings: the Palace Inside and the Chapels
The Medici ran Florence for close to three hundred years. They were bankers and they were patrons, and the second is why Botticelli, Brunelleschi, Michelangelo and the rest were able to work at all. What they collected, the paintings, the sculpture, the jewellery, the books, the manuscripts and the oddities, is still in the city. This is three hours spent on two buildings rather than a lap of the centre. The Palazzo Medici first, the seat of the family's political and cultural power, with rooms on a scale that explains what noble life in the Renaissance actually looked like. The Chapel of the Magi is inside it, and it tends to stop people mid-sentence. Then where they are buried: the Medici Chapels, with Michelangelo's New Sacristy, the Chapel of the Princes, faced in Florentine mosaic of semi-precious stone, and the crypt below, where the family lies.

Palazzo Medici Riccardi
The first Medici palace, where Cosimo il Vecchio and Lorenzo il Magnifico lived, and where Donatello, Michelangelo, Paolo Uccello, Benozzo Gozzoli and Botticelli all worked.
Piazza di San Lorenzo
Piazza San Lorenzo is the square with the Basilica of San Lorenzo standing in the middle of it.
Cappelle Medicee
The Medici Chapels were built as the family's burial place and are now a state museum, carved out of parts of the Basilica of San Lorenzo.

The Medici Chapels are two chapels built between the 16th and 17th centuries as an extension of the Basilica of San Lorenzo: the Sagrestia Nuova, designed by Michelangelo, and the larger Cappella dei Principi, which was worked out between the family and their architects.
