The Rostrum Where Mao Declared the Republic in 1949, Morning or Afternoon
A half-day walk through two UNESCO World Heritage Sites: the monuments of Tian'anmen Square, then the Forbidden City with a guide. It runs twice a day, so it fits either half of a Beijing itinerary rather than taking the whole of it. On tickets: the operator can buy the Forbidden City ticket in advance if you book at least 7 days ahead, which is the difference between walking in and queueing.

35 Dong Chang An Jie, Dong Cheng Qu
Grand Hotel Beijing (北京贵宾楼饭店). By taxi: 35 East Chang'an Avenue, Dongcheng District, Beijing (中国北京市东城区东长安街35号). By metro: line 1 or 8 to Wangfujing station, exit C (southwest), then 3 minutes west on foot.
Tiananmen Square
Hotel pickup by the guide between 8am and 1pm, or meet at the meeting point at 7:40am or 1:00pm. Then Tian'anmen Square, the largest public square of its kind in the world, and the ground used for the great parades and rallies. It is also where, in 1949, Chairman Mao stood on the rostrum of the Tian'anmen, the Gate of Heavenly Peace, and proclaimed the People's Republic of China. For security, the square is fenced with low iron railings and has four main entrances, east, west, south and north. It is open to the public until sunset, and everyone passes a security check at the entrance, so there are checkpoints on every approach.
Monument of the People's Heroes
From outside: the Memorial Hall of Chairman Mao, the Monument to the People's Heroes, the Great Hall of the People, the National Museum of China, the old Zhengyang Gate and its Arrow Tower, and the Tian'anmen Tower itself, which is the way through to the Forbidden City.
The Palace Museum
Then the Imperial Palace, the Forbidden City: the largest and best-preserved group of ancient imperial palaces anywhere, with 500 years of history. The ticket is bought in advance so the queue is skipped. The palace was built between 1406 and 1420, and it has been burnt, sacked, rebuilt and restored many times since, so most of what stands now dates from the 1700s onwards. The tour covers the highlights and ends at the north exit. The guide will help you find a taxi or bus on to wherever you are going next. Note: a current valid passport is required on the day.
