Twenty-Eight Rooms with a Guide, and Five Years as Italy's Royal Palace
A guided tour of the Palatine Gallery in the Palazzo Pitti, the last great residence of the Medici and one of the buildings Florence is measured by. The gallery takes up 28 rooms on the piano nobile, and holds the paintings once owned by the Grand Dukes of Tuscany. The hang is the point: the pictures are arranged by the decorative logic of a princely collection, not by period or school, which is the opposite of how a modern museum would do it. The private Medici collection includes Botticelli, Titian, Rubens and Caravaggio. The guide covers what happened to the palace after the family ended, when it passed to the House of Lorraine, and then the five years between 1865 and 1870 when it was the royal residence of Italy. When the guided part finishes, the rest of the building is yours: the Gallery of Modern Art, the Treasury of the Grand Dukes, the Museum of Fashion and Costume.

Galleria Palatina in Palazzo Pitti
Two hours with a guide. The Palatine Gallery, inside the Palazzo Pitti, holds Renaissance and Baroque painting in rooms with frescoed ceilings and gilded stucco. It was the private gallery of the Medici, and the names on the walls are Raphael, Titian, Rubens, Caravaggio and Botticelli. The pictures hang the way a princely collection hung them, with no chronological order at all, so the room reads as a room and not as a timeline.
Palazzo Pitti
The Palazzo Pitti is the largest palace in Florence, and three dynasties lived in it: the Medici, the Lorraine and the Savoy. It now holds seven museums. The Palatine Gallery has the Raphael, Titian, Rubens and Caravaggio. The Gallery of Modern Art covers the 19th and early 20th centuries. The Treasury of the Grand Dukes has the jewels, the silver and the precious objects that belonged to the Medici. The Museum of Fashion and Costume runs through several centuries of dress, the Porcelain Museum holds European collections, and the Carriage Museum has the vehicles the grand ducal court actually used. Outside is the Boboli, one of the defining Italian gardens, with its statues, fountains and the view back over the city.
Tesoro dei Granduchi
The Treasury of the Grand Dukes, inside the Pitti, holds the jewels, gold, silver and precious objects that belonged to the Medici and the Lorraine. It is installed in the old Medici treasury rooms, and what it shows is several centuries of craftsmanship made for the courts of the Tuscan grand dukes.
Palazzo Pitti
Gallery of Modern Art. Italian painting and sculpture from the late 18th century to the early 20th, including Neoclassicism, Romanticism and the Macchiaioli. The rooms are the ones the royal family lived in, which changes how the pictures read.
Museo della Moda e del Costume
The Museum of Costume and Fashion, in the Pitti, covers five centuries of dress: original garments, accessories and theatrical costume, from the Medici era through to contemporary haute couture.
Museo Delle Icone Russe
The collection of Russian icons at the Pitti runs from the 16th century to the 19th. The panels came into the Medici and Lorraine collections, and they carry the symbolism and the painting conventions of the Orthodox tradition into a Florentine royal palace.
Royal Apartments Pitti Palace
The Royal Apartments, lived in by the Medici, the Lorraine and the Savoy in turn. Frescoes, the furniture of the period, the rooms left decorated as they were used. This is the private half of the building rather than the museum half.
