The Pitti Palace was acquired by Eleonora di Toledo in 1550 as the grand-ducal residence, and it became the physical statement of Medici power. The palace holds five museums: the Palatine Gallery, the Gallery of Modern Art, the Museum of Fashion and Costume and the Treasury of the Grand Dukes. The Palatine Gallery carries the 16th and 17th-century painting, along with the rooms the family actually lived in. The Modern Art Gallery upstairs is a serious collection in its own right, and there is work by Raphael, Caravaggio and Titian in the Treasury. Behind the palace, the Boboli Gardens, laid out by Renaissance architects, with statues, fountains and grottoes. There is no guide on this one. Instead it comes with two eBooks written by art historians, covering the palace and the gardens, which you read at whatever pace suits you and keep afterwards.
