VersaillesThe guided part runs 90 minutes and has a stated route: the State Apartments, the King's Bedroom, and the Hall of Mirrors, with the monarchy from Louis XIV to Marie Antoinette told through the rooms they used. The day starts at a central point in Paris and transfers by bus. On arrival the group enters through a separate entrance, which is what keeps the queue out of the schedule. Afterwards the gardens are yours on foot, and they are larger than most visitors expect: 800 hectares, with around 210,000 flowers planted every year. They are among the most visited places in France. A guided tour of the gardens can be added, and the full-day option extends the visit to Marie Antoinette's private estate and her much-argued-over hamlet. Worth knowing what the palace actually was: the centre of French political power from 1682 to 1789, and not simply a royal house. The bus returns to central Paris at the end.
