Paris

Two things here that the standard Versailles coach tour tends not to include: audio headsets, so the guide is audible in rooms where several groups are talking at once, and the Royal Opera, the theatre Louis XV commissioned, known for its acoustics. Entry is reserved and timed. The coach is air conditioned, the guide speaks English, and the route inside covers the State Apartments, the Royal Chapel, a baroque building where the kings and queens worshipped, and the Hall of Mirrors. The gardens are a booking option rather than an inclusion. Take it and you get free time in André Le Nôtre's grounds and the view down the Grand Canal. Between late March or early April and October the Musical Fountain and Musical Garden season runs on selected days, with water and music together. Be clear about what is not in the price: the Grand Trianon, the Hameau de la Reine, the Trianon estate generally and the Galerie des Carrosses all need their own tickets. A seasonal upgrade combines the day with Monet's house and gardens at Giverny. Meet at Place du Général Kœnig, 75017 Paris. The day ends at Porte Maillot.
