Seville

Ninety minutes at the Alcázar, starting the moment the doors open, which puts the group among the first people through the gate and ahead of the day's crowd. The building is on the UNESCO list and its architecture runs from the Arab period to the Baroque without ever settling, because each ruler who took it rebuilt part of what he inherited rather than starting again. A local guide works through that history along with the religion and the politics attached to it. Film crews come here for the same reason. Game of Thrones used the palace and its gardens, and Lawrence of Arabia was shot here decades earlier, which tells you what the courtyards can be made to stand in for. The Cathedral is an option rather than a fixture. Chosen, it adds the largest Gothic cathedral in the world, guided, followed by free time inside and the climb up the Giralda for the view over Seville. The group forms in the Plaza del Triunfo, between the two monuments.
