Belém Reached by Boat Down the Tagus, After the Tram, and Inside the Tower
One day, three ways of getting around, and Belém arrived at from the water rather than the road. It starts on foot through the middle of Lisbon, with the history that goes with those streets. Then one of the city trams, which is the only sensible way up the hills and the reason Lisbon looks the way it does in every photograph. Then the boat, from the downtown waterfront to Belém, down the Tagus. It is the same approach the ships made, and the city reads completely differently from out there. At the end the group goes inside the Belém Tower, a UNESCO World Heritage site and the emblem of the Age of Discoveries, with the maritime history covered on the spot.

Praca Dom Pedro IV
The day opens with a walk through the busy streets of central Lisbon, taking the history as it comes: the Sé de Lisboa, the Alfama quarter and the Praça do Comércio, which is as much of the old city as can be covered on foot in a morning.
Alfama
Then one of the Lisbon trams, up the narrow streets and the gradients that make this city what it is. The tram runs on worn track at the pace of the traffic, which is the pace of local life, and it crosses several different neighbourhoods. Alfama gets a walk of its own.
Tagus River
After the city by land, the same city from the water: a boat from the downtown waterfront to Belém, down the Tagus, with the 25 de Abril Bridge overhead and the Christ the King statue on the far bank.
Torre de Belem
At Belém the group goes inside the Belém Tower, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the emblem of the Portuguese Age of Discoveries. The monument and its maritime history, and then the rest of the Belém quarter.
