Belém Under the Orange Umbrella, from the Presidential Palace to the Tower
Belém on foot, and the Portuguese discoveries told from the ground they started on. Portugal was the first global empire in the world, and it began in this district. The ships left these harbours to sail into water nobody had charted, taking the risk the Atlantic represented, and came back having claimed land and built churches and forts on it. Belém is also one of the best looking parts of the city: historic buildings everywhere and two UNESCO sites, the Jerónimos Monastery and the Tower of Belém. Both were King Manuel I's idea, and both were built in the style that took his name, the Manueline. The route also takes in the Monument to the Discoveries, the Presidential Palace, Afonso de Albuquerque Square, the gardens of Belém, the CCB, the Compass Rose and the Pastéis de Belém.
