The meeting point is in front of the South Portal of the Jerónimos Monastery church, where there is shade in the morning.

Jeronimos Monastery

The visit starts at the Upper Cloister, which is where the architecture reads best, looking down over the whole of it. The guide covers what the building meant to the society that paid for it, and where it sits in the story of the Portuguese navigations of the 15th and 16th centuries. The lower level of the cloister opens onto the Chapter Room, the old Refectory and the tomb of Fernando Pessoa, moved here in the first half of the 20th century. The church is part of the visit too: the summit of Manueline architecture, the style that appeared in Portugal at the start of the 16th century and put Renaissance detail onto late Gothic structures.

The original pastel de nata

The original pastel de nata. The recipe was worked out by the monks of the Jerónimos Monastery, and it has been sold in the same premises since the middle of the 19th century.

Jardim da Praca do Imperio

Built for the Portuguese World Exhibition of 1940: a garden carrying 32 coats of arms, one for each of the former provinces of the Portuguese Empire.

Padrao Dos Descobrimentos

The monument went up in 1960, on the 500th anniversary of the death of Infante D. Henrique, the central figure of the Portuguese navigations. The other figures along it are the ones who carried Portuguese culture around the world.

Torre de Belem

Another high point of Manueline architecture, and a defensive position built to stop invaders reaching Lisbon, the capital of the kingdom. UNESCO lists it as a World Heritage Site.
